Sunday marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The wall that once divided East and West Berlin was torn down on Nov. 9, 1989, becoming a symbol of Germany’s divided past and the freedom that followed. Built in 1961 by the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), it split the country's communist East and democratic West. Nowadays, visitors don’t have to travel to Germany to see its remains, which are on display in dozens of locations worldwide, from Luxembourg to Australia. Although portions of the wall were claimed by tourists and residents who chipped away at it for mementos, you can still visit a 1.3-kilometer (more than 4/5 mile) section that still stands in Berlin's East Side Gallery. « Less
